The Broken Rose Dream:The Rupture of“Emotion-Literature” Community—— A Re-examination of Disharmony Between the Zhou Brothers

The academia often uses the phrase “brotherly harmony” to describe the relationship between the Zhou brothers before their disharmony.This agreeable relationship is mainly manifested in the life and career patterns of the “emotion-literature” community that once formed between the brothers,which is oriented around Lu Xun’s path choice and guaranteed by Zhou Zuoren’s active pursuit.Once these two prerequisites were broken,the so-called “brotherly harmony” pattern would also disappear.By studying the relationship between the Zhou brothers from 1906 to 1923,this “emotion-literature” community pattern underwent several changes with Yutai Xinzi’s involvement and Zhou Zuoren’s gradual maturity in his thoughts.Therefore,when we re-examine the disharmonious incident,the purpose is not to seek the “truth” of the facts,but to restore the life and work patterns between the Zhou brothers from 1901 to 1923 through the reorganization of relevant materials,showing their ideological unity and division.This is quite essential not only for the study of the Zhou brothers’ lives,but also for the study of modern Chinese literary history.
