Dusty History:Interviews with Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai by Reporters of Shen Bao after the Xian Incident

In April 1937,Shen Bao sent its reporters Yu Songhua and Sun Enlin to visit Yan'an and interview Mao Zedong,Zhou Enlai and other leaders of the Communist Party of China (CPC).However,when Yu Songhua returned to Shanghai to publish the story in the form of a travelogue,the Kuomintang's Shanghai News Agency intervened its publishing,so the content of his conversation with Mao and Zhou was completely censored and thus unknown by the public.Fortunately,in June of the same year,Yu Songhua was invited by the Shanghai Customs Club to give a speech,in which he openly stated the process of interviewing Mao and Zhou,and the speech was subsequently published in the internal publication of the Customs,Guan Sheng (Voice of Customs).It provides valuable historical materials for people to understand the thoughts and activities of Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai after the Xi'an Incident.The author infers that the Shen Bao reporters “secret” visit to Yan’an was probably initiated and actively promoted by the CPC.
