Abstract
As the dean of the Department of Chinese literature of Yenching University in the 1930s, Guo Shaoyu was also a New Literature writer, a researcher of classical literature and Chinese educationist. With the help of the research background of classical literature, he had put forward some solutions to the problems existing in the New Literature at that time, and had laid an important foundation for the institutionalization of New Literature. Under the background of higher education institutions becoming more specialized in the 1930s, the value of New Literature as a kind of “knowledge” has not been universally recognized. It’s better to solve the problems of New Literature in a down-to-earth way and open up the future development space of it. It is in this sense that Guo Shaoyu’s thoughts and practice has an important reference significance and value.
