On the Generation and Connotation of Conceptual Art and Its Revolutionary Significance
Abstract: The two paths developed from Action Painting lead to the two major types of Conceptual Art of idea and behavior respectively. The formation of Conceptual Art mainly comes from the triple aspects: Firstly,Conceptual artists question and rebel against easel painting who try to get out of the canvas and gradually intellectualize and conceptualize art.Secondly,Conceptual Art hopes to be presented with pure and completely dematerialized media, thereby preventing the commercialization of art. Finally,Conceptual Art also stems from the desire to go beyond the object-obsessed art of 1960s,with a strong disfigurement tendency. All of above-mentioned consciously artistic interests make Conceptual Art form its own unique connotation, that is ,to follow the core principle of “ideaconcept is king” in their idea of making art,to seek the media that match the ideaconcept of art,and to reintroduced the art of language and literature into the field of fine arts, and then breaking through the traditional museum art gallery restrictions in production and exhibition, and resisting the general commercialization of artworks. As an “action” or “event” in the field of art,Conceptual Art has transformed modern art from visual expression to conceptual expression, not only challenging the traditional art classification and the boundaries between various arts, but also allowing life directly becomes art,and art directly becomes life, which constitutes a comprehensive questioning and complete subversion of the existing artistic symbolic order.
