“Barbarian” Domination in the Core Area in the History of Cultural and Political Interactions in China

  • The basic characteristics of the Chinese civilization is its extraordinary toleration and assimilation towards alien cultures. Its understanding of the boundary of " inside” and " outside” has been parallel to its categories of " civilized” and " barbarians” with a dynamic and dialectical interactions. Because for a long period of time, China had been advanced in cultural and economic development in East Asia, China was able to absorb other nearby cultures while the neighbor groups were learning from China. In Chines history, there were many times that neighbor " barbarian groups” invaded China and established their dynasties. But a lot of historical records and archives revealed that those " barbarian dynasties” were deeply affected by the Chinese culture and finally assimilated into the " Chinese nation” and Chinese culture.
