Benti Hermeneutics is Chinese Hermeneutics—— Also on the Difference and Fusion of Chinese and Western Hermeneutic Ideas
Abstract: Since the question of constructing “Chinese hermeneutics” was raised, this concept remains in a state of vagueness and lacks a clear reference,so it is necessary for us to ask what “Chinese hermeneutics” is.This paper aims to argue for an accurate reply: “Benti(“本体”) hermeneutics” is Chinese hermeneutics.Interpretation means the integration of the past linguistic meaning into the present context,or the integration of the present feeling into the past language.Interpretation cant be separated from Benti, and vice versa.Interpretation is a kind of Benti-cognition.Benti hermeneutics (onto-generative hermeneutics) is the true form of Chinese hermeneutics, which is essentially realized in a doctrine of understanding and method of interpretation through the Yijing(《易经》) model of ontogenetic cosmology and its derivatives.Based on the investigation of different conceptions of Chinese hermeneutics by contemporary scholars such as Tang Yijie,Fu Weixun,Pan Derong and Fu Yongjun,we point out their shortcomings while affirming their theoretical contributions, and re-argue that “Benti interpretation” has the historical originality of Chinese philosophy, conceptual generality, openness of thinking and creative insights.
