Literary Quotations and the Cause of the Title Wild Grass
-
Abstract: Lu Xun entitles his only anthology of prose poems as Wild Grass, and endows “wild grass” with unique literary implication, which not only sensed by some “contemporary allusions” from real life and acquires lots of “classic allusions” for nourishment, but also proved contextually by abundant “national allusions” and merged with some “foreign allusions”.Among the latter, the “foreign allusions” from Tolstoy’s novels,Evolution and Ethics as translated by Yan Fu,and the poem of the same title by a Japanese female poet.A systematic probing of how “the use of literary quotation” influenced the title of Wild Grass can either help the readers to understand Lu Xun’s extraordinary efforts in projecting his creative writing,or help them to know the features of textual construction in modern Chinese literary canons such as Wild Grass.
