Educational Discipline and Political Construction: The Shaping of Sun Yat-sen's Textbook Media Image in His Youth
Abstract: During the period of the Nanjing Nationalist Government, textbooks,as an official medium for the construction of national ideology, systematically shaped the image of a young Sun Yat-sen who combined the traits of a rural boy and a revolutionary pioneer. This image was achieved through three narratives: "an outstanding and simple good boy", "a rebel against feudal dross",and "a young man with lofty revolutionary aspirations",organically integrating individual growth experiences with national political discourse. This image construction not only relied on the symbolic writing in textbooks but also completed multiple educational disciplines in cognition, emotion, and behavior through the interpretation of teachers' books and the performance of campus ceremonies. The textbookmediated image of young Sun Yat-sen was not only a political tool for the Kuomintang to strengthen ideological integration but also an educational practice led by a political party under the global wave of nationalism. This image reveals the structural contradiction between the rational enlightenment demands and the ideological indoctrination practice in party education. This contradiction reflects the political and cultural predicament faced by modern nationstates, that is,how to strike a balance between historical truth, educational autonomy, and political construction. The shaping of the textbook-mediated image of young Sun Yat-sen provides a historical mirror for analyzing the covert mechanisms of ideological infiltration and power shaping.
