No.7 Chengyuli:The Precise Birthplace of Communist Manifesto
Abstract: Youxin Printing Press, where Chen Wangdaos first complete Chinese translation of Communist Manifesto was printed, marked the birthplace of this seminal work.Originally located at No.221 Fuxing Zhong Road in Shanghai (formerly French Concession,Route Lafayette,Chengyuli),Youxins site was recently opened to public as part of the “2nd List of Shanghai Revolutionary Cultural Relics”.Though almost all literature and introductions have unanimously put Youxin at No.12 Chengyuli, the author believes its exact location was in fact No.7,based on an advertisement in the 1st issue of Volume 8 of New Youth placed by Youxin Printing Press itself,as well as records in contemporary publications including Commercial Directory of Shanghai and Shanghai Guide.
