Navigating the Narrative Challenges in Historical Epistemology——With a Discussion on the Metatheoretical Construction and Its Dilemmas in Contemporary Western Marxism
Abstract: The narrative dilemma of historical epistemology lies in the fact that theories, while pursuing systematization, simultaneously face the ideological risk of self-ossification and solidification.Marxism, through historical dialectics, consistently integrates historical self-awareness into the object, the subject, and the theory itself, maintaining a self-critique of its own consciousness. It provides a historical-scientific solution for navigating this narrative dilemma, successfully transforming it into an internal driving force for theoretical development.Although the diverse theoretical paths of contemporary Western Marxism attempt to respond to this dilemma, they fall into new predicaments by deviating from the fundamental principle that the theory itself must be thoroughly “historicized”.Moreover, they reproduce,in new forms, the rupture between theory and historical practice.Only by returning to the fundamental standpoint of Marx's historical dialectics, and maintaining methodological self-awareness in the dialectical unity of theory and practice, can we truly navigate the narrative dilemma of historical epistemology and avoid the fate of ideological ossification.
