Beyond the School of Xueheng

  • The studies of Wu Mi and the members of the Xueheng School are generally carried out within the context of Xueheng and potentially beyond. As a typical work written by Wu Mi in 1922 that went beyond the scope of Xueheng, “A Response to the New Cultural Movement” is well known for Lu Xun’s fierce criticism towards it in “A Doctrine of Inclusiveness”(《一是之学说》). However, the article itself is barely recognised by anyone, being overshadowed by Lu Xun’s high-profile writings. Based on a careful examination of the full text of “A Response to the New Cultural Movement”, this paper aims to discuss different parties’ various responses and long-term effects of this article, the extent of Wu Mi’s knowledge and understanding of the New Cultural Movement, and the “embarrassment” encountered by Wu Mi and this article due to their untimeliness, so as to understand Wu Mi and the people associated with the school of Xueheng in a larger perspective.
