On the Three Transformations of Chinese Classic Novel Comment in Modern Time
-
Abstract
Comparing with archaic Chinese classic novel comment, there have been three changes in that of modern novels.First, the authors of novel comment have transformed from booksellers and literati to politicians and novelists.Second, the purpose of critique is no longer limited to moral education of advising to be good and penalizing the vicious.Instead,it emphasizes the importance of enlightenment.Third, the application of narrative analysis has gradually replaced that of technique analysis of writing.Modern novel critics use the classical novel critique to spread new knowledge and enlighten the people, leading the way in cultivating citizens’ political awareness and popularizing scientific knowledge. They also use the concepts, methods and perspectives of narrative theory and play a significant role in the construction of modern novel theory system. Moreover, they contribute to the modernization process of Chinese novels, since their identity as professional journalists and novelists promotes the sustainable development of novel creation.
